Spanish police smash a cryptocurrency investment scam that used AI to defraud $21.50 million

According to Decrypt, Spanish police have arrested six suspects and successfully dismantled a two-year-old cryptocurrency investment fraud ring. The gang used artificial intelligence technology to create fake celebrity videos and defrauded 208 victims of more than $21.50 million. The investigation began two years ago when a victim from the city of Granada reported to the police that he had lost more than $700,000. The scam ring lured investors by promising high returns and asked victims to make additional investments to get their money back. Police said the main ringleader of the gang was caught as he prepared to flee to Dubai, and six suspects, aged between 34 and 57, have been charged with fraud, money laundering and forgery of documents. The case is still under investigation.
